Lily Bart lives in New York City and she is married to Lawrence Selden, but he doesn’t have much money either. The two of them are not able to live on her husband's income alone so she spends her days seeking out wealthy men and then marrying them for their money.
The protagonist is not always successful at this endeavor and sometimes when she does succeed, it comes with consequences that are hard to live with.
